Claire’s Story:
I was born and raised on the Gold Coast, and from a very young age I was constantly keeping up with an extremely busy routine, my days were always full of activities. Some of my most memorable experiences are the countless musical competitions, touch football tournaments and long hours of academic commitments. This type of lifestyle when l was younger has allowed me to adapt it into all aspects of my life such as my work, study and other commitments.
The high school l attended was A.B. Paterson College on a 100% music/academic scholarship. In year 11 l was given the opportunity to go on a trip to Africa for 3 weeks with an organisation called World Challenge. I was only 16 years old at the time and it was my first time ever going overseas without my parents with around 8 other students at my school that time. This was a very challenging yet rewarding trip, l learnt a great amount about myself and my capabilities. We adapted and learnt the local lifestyle over in Africa we had no access to Wi-Fi or internet for 3 weeks and were living out of a backpack whilst camping. One day we did a hike over 20 km which l found enjoyable but obviously very challenging at the same time. Later that night we found out that the people living in the small village we visited did that hike daily in order to collect wood and necessities which l thought was insane! We helped build families’ homes out of termite waste and mud which was definitely an eye opening experience. Seeing their living conditions and what they do made me realise how lucky I am and grateful I should be. After visiting Africa and seeing the lack of opportunities the children truly have, I promised myself that I would take every chance that comes my way and make the most of it.
I am currently working while also studying physiotherapy at Griffith University. I always knew l wanted to go into the health industry aspect as l could see myself in a career where l was helping others overcome their challenges. This led me to applying to a position at the Gold Coast Physio and Sports Health Clinic, as l wanted a job in the field of what my future career would be.
